An umbrella’s opening mechanism can make a difference to everyday convenience. But “automatic” doesn’t always mean the same thing. Before choosing, check whether a model is manual, automatic-open or automatic-open-and-close.
Manual Umbrellas
A manual umbrella is opened by hand, usually by moving a runner along the shaft until the canopy locks into position. Closing also requires a manual action. The release mechanism varies, so follow the instructions supplied with your model.
This may suit you if you prefer direct control over opening and closing. Check that the grip and release feel comfortable for you.
Automatic-Open Umbrellas
An automatic-open umbrella opens its canopy when you press a button. Closing is normally a separate manual action unless the product also specifies automatic closing.
Button-operated opening can be convenient when stepping outside into rain. Give the canopy enough room and keep it away from people, doorways and nearby objects.
Automatic Open and Close
On many automatic-open-and-close folding umbrellas, a button opens the canopy and another press collapses it. Collapsing the canopy does not necessarily retract the shaft or fully pack the umbrella away.
You may still need to push the shaft back into its stored position by hand to reset the mechanism. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions: operating sequences and the effort required vary between models.
Check More Than the Button
Compare the opening mechanism alongside folded length, weight, canopy dimensions and handle shape. If hand strength or dexterity is a concern, ask about the particular model’s operation. A button does not guarantee that every step will be effortless or one-handed.
Opening style alone doesn’t establish durability or wind resistance. Check the individual product’s construction and stated specifications.
Careful Handling
- Read the supplied instructions before first use.
- Give the canopy room to open and keep it away from faces.
- Keep fingers clear of moving joints and the closing mechanism.
- Stop if the mechanism catches rather than forcing it.
- Let the umbrella dry before storing it for an extended period.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose according to your routine and comfort. Manual operation offers a hands-on approach; automatic opening offers button-operated convenience; automatic open-and-close can simplify canopy closure but may still require a manual reset.
