What Does UV +50 Mean on an Umbrella?

Understanding UV and UPF Labels

You may see umbrellas described as “UV 50+” or “UPF 50+”. Check the individual product specification to understand exactly what rating the manufacturer provides.

What Does UPF Mean?

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It describes how much ultraviolet radiation passes through a fabric under test conditions. A verified UPF 50 rating means approximately one-fiftieth of the measured UV radiation passes through the tested fabric.

Fabric Protection Is Not Complete Personal Protection

That rating applies to the fabric, not complete protection for the person beneath it. Sunlight can still reach you from the sides, so an umbrella should complement other sun-protection measures rather than replace them.

Check the Individual Product Rating

If UV protection is important to you, choose a model with an explicitly stated rating. Colour, fabric appearance or waterproofing alone isn’t enough to establish its UPF.

Check the product description for both rain-use information and UV protection details. If a rating isn’t listed, ask us before assuming the umbrella offers a particular level of protection.
